A Simple Guide for Achieving Radical Wellness
This simple guide is brought to you by Moon + Mercury, a radical wellness brand based on the research of adaptogens and epigenetics.
Plants are cool, but complicated. Especially when talking about how plants effect humans. But since plants and humans evolved together, we know that our interdependency is not only beneficial, but necessary for our survival. This is at the root of Radical Wellness.
Radical Wellness considers the whole person – body, mind and spirit. But we take it one step further. We consider how the whole person can achieve optimal health with the support of whole plants. While more conventional wellness might direct us to use pharmaceuticals as a remedy for what ails us, our radical approach to wellness directs us down a plant-based path, harnessing the holistic and complex composition of whole plants to feed, replenish, restore, supplement, optimize and heal us.
But not all plants are created equal, and that’s where Moon + Mercury comes in. Below is a simple guide to help you make sense of what, why and how whole plants can help you achieve Radical Wellness.
A few decades ago, the Soviet Union instructed their scientists to search for and develop substances that would optimize the performance of their military personnel, athletes and their nation’s greatest thinkers so they had a competitive edge in stamina, strength, endurance and mental abilities. After many years, the scientists turned to herbs, and uncovered a specific group that became known as Adaptogens. Among the earliest ones discovered were American gingseng, eleuthero, rhodiola and holy basil. Since then, many more have been added to the list, including mushrooms. All of these have been shown to have a gentle but measurable influence on immunity, sleep, stress levels, energy and endurance.
One of the most important herbs in Chinese medicine, and one of the most known adaptogens, ashwaganda works simultaneously to optimize vitality and boost energy throughout the day, and also to promote deep, restful sleep at night. This is a hallmark feature of a true adaptogen – neither stimulant or nervine, adaptogens help create homeostasis. It’s also known to decrease stress response and boost general happiness over time with continued use.
We study and integrate the physical and energetic properties of plants into our formulations based on how they are expressed in the body and on the skin. We pay close attention to adaptogenic herbs and mushrooms, and their unique ability to help regulate stress response in the body and skin.
The rate at which nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream via the skin or GI tract is known as its bioavailability. Some plant constituents are more readily absorbed than others, and it’s important to know which ones so you don’t waste effort and money on skincare and supplements that are not well absorbed. We know that curcumin, for instance, is not well absorbed, even though it is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and popular superfood. Our patented complex binds curcumin with a lipid carrier that delivers the full spectrum of fat soluble compounds into the blood stream efficiently and rapidly.
Some plants are known as a bioaccumulators, meaning they absorb nutrients and toxins from the soil more readily than other plants might. This sponge-like quality is a wonderful thing if the plant is grown in nutrient-dense soil. But when toxins are present, including pesticides and heavy metals, bioaccumulators absorb these harmful substances, which can have negative consequences when ingested by humans. This is why we source organic whole plants from farmers we trust.
Curcumin is a mixture of active compounds found in turmeric. Only about 3% of turmeric is comprised of curcumin, so it requires mass amounts of the whole plant to receive maximum benefit. Our full traceable, 95% pure curcumin sustainably extracted and bound to a protein isolate that is scientifically proven to absorb in 20 minutes. Our patented technology ensures maximum bioavailability of this potent anti-inflammatory.
EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate)
One of the most powerful compounds in green tea, EGCG has been studied to treat various diseases, has been shown to have powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits and has a strong potential to reduce stress in the body. EGCG may be one of the main reasons green tea has such powerful medicinal properties.
Epigenetics is the study of how lifestyle choices can impact aging. Certain lifestyle choices, including what we consume through our skin and system, modulate the expression of genes to promote or compromise our health, beauty, vitality and longevity. Adaptogens help regular and stabilize physiological functions, reduce stress on the body and turn on positive gene expression.
Green Tea is one of the healthiest known beverages on the planet. Rich in polyphenols, green boasts large amounts of a catechin called EGCG (See EGCG above). Catechins are natural antioxidants that help prevent cell damage, reduce the formation of free radicals in the body, protect cells and delay cell aging. Green tea also contains caffeine, which delivers naturally stimulating benefits shown to promote brain function, boost mood and increase reaction time. Finally, green tea contains the amino acid L-theanine, which is able to cross the blood-brain barrier to increase the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety benefits. It also increases dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain. Studies show that caffeine and L-theanine can have synergistic effects. The combination of the two is particularly potent at improving brain function.
Holy Basil (Tulsi)
Native to India, this Ayurvedic herb is considered one of the most powerful adaptogens, known for its rejuvenating properties and ability to stabilize the nervous system, clear mental fog, support memory and act as a nervine during depression.
Any process that living things use to maintain a state of stability, balance, harmony in order to ensure its survival.

Known as the Queen Healer, reishi is a mild adaptogen that needs to be taken over a longer period of time in order to receive its full benefit. The herb is known as an immunomodulator, meaning it can either increase or decrease immune system activity depending on what is needed for the immune system to achieve balance. When taken daily, reishi is shown to relieve stress and inspire feelings of groundedness and inner strength.
Also known as “golden root”, rhodiola is an adaptogenic herb that has been proven to boost energy, reduce fatigue and enhance physical strength due to its ability to increase synthesis of ATP, which is essential for cellular energy. Additionally, rhodiola has been shown to improve productivity, reduce insomnia and depression, and confers significant benefits to the nervous system.
